Research summary
The study aims to investigate whether ‘Singing for Breathing’ can improve self perceived quality of life and health status for people with chronic pulmonary conditions.
The singing intervention hopes to improve people’s ability to cope with chronic respiratory illness by• Practicing relaxation
• Providing gentle physical exercise
• Improving posture related awareness of habitual breathing patterns
• Developing diaphragmatic breathing
• Introducing a new form of psycho-social support
• Developing confidence through enjoyment and sense of achievementThis study plans to explore themes that reflect how participants perceive the singing sessions and why they are motivated to make the effort to attend them. The study will look at the participants’ perception of the above methods and aims to investigate which of the session elements are contributing to a perceived improvement of Quality of Life and Health Status in line with above listed outcomes and which elements may be problematic and need to be further developed and refined.
