Research summary
Recent advances in thoracic surgical technique mean that a number of procedures are now performed using video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS). This is where lung surgery is performed through multiple small incisions in the chest wall using a camera mounted on a scope(keyhole surgery). Despite the small incisions required for this surgery it is still the source of pain and discomfort for the patient.
This study seeks to establish if thoracoscopic surgery performed through a single port/incision reduces early post-operative pain compared with conventional multiple port thoracoscopic surgery.
This is an initial pilot study to be conducted at two centres and designed to establish whether a trial of the two techniques is acceptable to patients, clinically feasible and can be delivered in a reasonable timescale.
