Research summary
Patients with end stage arthritis of the foot and ankle experience pain and reduction of function. This is usually treated with surgery, if the patient is fit enough. These patients are often overweight, which may increase pain and make surgery and rehabilitation difficult and sometimes dangerous. The actual impact of increased weight on pain has never been measured, as these patients have difficulty exercising. It may now be possible to measure the effect of weight loss with the use of an anti-gravity machine.
