  • Research summary

Simple renal cysts are uncommon in children compared to adults. However, simple cysts in children are being increasingly identified on imaging. They are relatively benign in nature but they can cause symptoms such as pain and haematuria and lead to complications such as malignancy or multiple cysts. There is little data on their natural history which in turn leads to inconsistent practice in surveillance and follow up
    .
On review of the literature there is limited evidence regarding the optimal management of these patients. The small numbers of patients captured in these studies significantly limits their application to clinical practice. The management of these patients remains controversial. It is unclear how long these children should be followed up for and how regularly to repeat ultrasound scans to monitor the simple renal cysts. It is also unclear which patients are more at risk of having symptoms or complications.

We propose a retrospective review of children who have been identified with a simple renal cyst on two more subsequent ultrasound scans over the last 18 years. The radiological reporting system has data going back to 1996 in our tertiary paediatric centre covering patients from across the region and North Wales. We estimate that we should be able to review 100 patients. We aim to describe the natural history of simple renal cysts in children and to describe how frequently these children are followed up as outpatients.

This will enable us to provide evidence to facilitate recommendations on the management, follow up and surveillance of simple renal cysts in children.
