  • Research summary

Dental decay (caries) affects 12% of 3-year-olds, 23% of 5-year-olds and 48% of 8-year-olds in the primary dentition. Current treatments leave up to 43% with pain and infection. An alternative treatment option is silver diamine fluoride (SDF). SDF has a side effect of staining caries black, but is easy to apply. It has proven to be effective in stopping caries progressing (caries arrest). It is not well adopted in England, therefore it is important to investigate its acceptability and the views of children, their parents and dental professionals.

This will be carried out through 3 stages.
    1. A questionnaire completed by parents of children aged 2-8 with dental decay about whether they would accept SDF for their child, and what may impact this. This has been produced with the help of PPI representatives.
    2. Interviews with approximately 20 dental professionals exploring their perceptions about using SDF for dental decay in children.
3.Interviews with children with dental decay to explore how useful they find an information video co-produced with children about SDF, what they think of the treatment and what information they want to know about the treatment.

Interviews will be analysed with framework analysis. Questionnaires will be analysed through descriptive statistics and logistic regression.
