  • Research summary

This research is a qualitative study investigating the experiences of siblings on a West Midlands Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The experience of having a child on PICU for families is recognised as stressful and complex. For siblings, who often have limited information, are coping with family and routine change and are witnessing trauma, PICU can have potential consequences for long-term psycho-social well-being however little is known about the experiences of these children.

This study aims to explore sibling experiences of having a brother or sister on PICU through semi-structured interviews and creative artwork. The study will aim to include 6-10 participants, aged 10-17 years, who have had a sibling on PICU at Birmingham Children's Hospital . Written, informed consent will be gained from the participant and parent/guardian. The interviews will take place in the sibling room at the hospital or an alternative venue nearby and will last around 30 minutes with a further 30 minutes allocated for artwork.

The qualitative data gathered by the interviews will be audio-recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. The creative artwork will be analysed separately. The main objective will be to give this under-represented population of children a 'voice', consequently aiming to inform practice, improve the experiences of siblings on PICU and develop further psycho-social support for this vulnerable group of children and their families.

This research is being undertaken as part of a Masters in Clinical Health Research at University of Birmingham.
