  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to quantify the forces acting on the shoulder joint during pushing of a manual wheelchair and seated transfers. The shoulder joint is known to degenerate with age, particularly if manual wheelchair use is the primary form of mobility. This can leave wheelchair users without an independent form of mobility. It is therefore important to understand the forces imparted on the shoulder to guide prevention of injury.

This study will calculate shoulder joint forces during manual wheelchair propulsion and seated transfers of experienced manual wheelchair users. The study will also be used to measure how different physical parameters and pushing technique affect shoulder joint forces. This information could be used to optimise shoulder joint function for manual wheelchair propulsion.
