Research summary
While the rehabilitation of edentulous jaws (no remaining natural teeth) using implant supported dentures and bridges has become a routine procedure, the rehabilitation of lower jaws with implants in the posterior region is often complicated because of the lack of sufficient bone volume and the presence of anatomical structures. Short dental implants are used to circumvent these difficulties. Recent systematic reviews indicate that short implants have similar survival rates compared to longer implants but so far no clinical data are available on the optimal number of short implants to support a fixed bridge in the lower jaw.
This study aims to investigate the clinical performance of 4 mm short implants supporting fixed bridges in the lower jaw. The study will compare the performance of two short implants combined with two conventional length implants against four short implants combined with two conventional length implants.REC name
