Research summary
This study is funded by the British Dietetic Association. Its aim is to find out what dietitians and their patients think of a new way of doing dietary assessments. Usually within the dietetic clinic appointment, the dietitian asks the patient a series of questions to get detailed information about what they eat and drink on a typical day. In this study patients will instead be asked to complete their own records of what they eat using a website that has been specifically developed to do dietary assessments, www.myfood24.org. They will do this at home on at least three days before they come to their dietetic appointment. Before the appointment, both the dietitian and patient will review the diet records and the nutritional feedback provided on the website and then discuss it together in the appointment. Dietitians and patients will complete questionnaires and attend interviews to investigate how acceptable they thought this new way of doing things was; how useful they found the website; and suggestions for future developments. Participants will be in the study for up to six months.
This study will take place within a large teaching hospital. Adults with a range of health conditions such as kidney disease, cancer, diabetes and allergies who have been referred for a dietetic out-patient appointment will be invited to participate.
Using this new technology could have a number of benefits such as saving time, providing a more accurate dietary assessment, reducing hospital visits and increasing the motivation and skills of patients to look after their health. If this study demonstrates that it is feasible to use myfood24 in NHS dietetic services, then these benefits will be explored further in future studies.REC name
