Research summary
The way in which a diagnosis of dementia is communicated to people has been found to have an impact on how well they are able to come to terms with their diagnosis, how well they follow advise from clinicians to manage it, as well as their emotional wellbeing. A guide has been developed that aims to improve people’s experiences of the communication of the outcomes of assessment for dementia. This guide requires evaluation to determine if it is effective in achieving this aim. The purpose of this study is to begin the process of evaluation by looking at how acceptable the guide is felt to be by the people who use it. This study will also look at some of the practicalities involved which will inform future research of the guide’s effectiveness.
Participants in the study will be clinicians who work in services that assess people for dementia, called Memory Assessment Services, as well as patients and their companions who use these services. These services are for people who are over 65 years of age and are experiencing changes in their thinking or memory that might be indicative of dementia. Participants experiences of using the guide will be gathered using questionnaires and interviews and compared to the experiences of those who haven’t used the guide.
