Research summary
This study will investigate the efficacy for individuals suffering from a chronic physical health condition of a shared read aloud intervention- Get into Reading (GIR) developed by national charity The Reader Organisation (TRO)- on mental health and well-being. The study outlined here sits within a larger project addressing the same question in a number of groups, including those unaffiliated with the NHS: i) adults and older adults in the community, ii) adults with mental health problems iii) students vulnerable to mental health problems, iv) adults suffering from addiction problems v) adults with a chronic physical health condition, and vi) children in schools. However, this application will focus only on the study relating to individuals with a chronic physical health condition (v). We hypothesize that attending Get Into Reading will improve mental well-being by helping to turn passive experience of suffering emotion into articulate painful concerns. The project will use a mixed methodology: standardised questionnaires and qualitative interviews will be employed to assess physical and psychological health; transcribed video-recorded group sessions will be subject to analysis by a multidisciplinary (literary, psychological, linguistic) team of experts. The results will also be compared to non-clinical groups outside of the NHS, as listed above, who will undergo an equivalent shared reading group intervention.
