  • Research summary

Clinical guidelines have recently been updated to include the practice of Shared Decision Making (SDM) in the healthcare of patients. Research has shown this practice is important to patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), however, research looking at the practice of SDM shows inconsistencies. In order for this to be implemented effectively, the current practice and the needs and preferences of patients and clinicians involved must be understood. \n\nUsing semi-structured interviews, this study will aim to explore current experiences for engaging in Shared Decision-Making in the treatment of IBD, as well as the preferences of those involved. People with IBD will be asked about their experiences of IBD, its treatments, and experiences of making decisions relating to treatments, and their information and decision-support needs for choosing treatments that are right for them. This will lead to an understanding of important factors to patients, meaning available information can be tailored to suit the patient population. Clinicians will be asked to provide their views and experiences of IBD treatment decisions, as well as their perspective of SDM and how this could be implemented to assist patients in the future. \n\nThe sample will consist of between 10-20 people with a diagnosis of IBD; and between 10-20 clinicians involved in the process, this sample will include specialist IBD nurses, Gastroenterologists, and Colorectal Surgeons. \n\nData collected will then be analyzed thematically following the guidance outlined by Bruan and Clarke (2013) resulting in the identification of key features of decision making and the needs of those involved to inform decision support interventions for SDM.
