Research summary
BACKGROUND: Recommendations to embed shared decision-making (SDM) within practice is a National Institute for Clinical Excellence initiative for all NHS organisations to consider. SDM is undefined within UK ambulance service encounters.
AIM: To explore shared decision making between paramedics, patients and carers during an ambulance incident call out.
DESIGN: Constructivist Grounded Theory involving 20 service users, significant others and paramedics
METHODS: Interviews will be conducted with video conferencing software, telephone, or face to face with service users, significant others and paramedics.
ANALYSIS: We will use a recognised approach to data analysis which will be Grounded Theory. This involves a constant comparative method to gather data, generate categories which will influence subsequent data gathering.
OUTCOMES: A theoretical explanation of how decisions are made and shared within ambulance incident call out. Guidance to inform practitioners and policymakers to guide education and practice.REC name
