  • Research summary

It is essential to ensure that sexual health promotion is inclusive and reaches everyone. We know that some LGBTQ+ groups appear to be over-represented in some inclusion health groups, which includes those in prison, those experiencing homelessness, those experiencing substance misuse and those working in street and brothel based sex work. There is a lack of evidence telling us how effective sexual health messaging is in LGBTQ+ groups who are also part of inclusion health groups. We also don’t know much about the barriers they face in complying with sexual health related advice. We want to learn more about people’s experiences so that health messages can be as effective as possible.

The overall aim of this project is to develop a greater understanding of the experiences of receiving or seeking out sexual health messaging or advice and barriers and facilitators in complying with the advice in LGBTQ+ inclusion health groups. This advice may relate to practicing safer sex, being vigilant for specific symptoms or seeking support via sexual health services, for instance.

This project will draw on qualitative interview data collected from 25-30 participants in London and the South East of England. Interviews will be either face to face or virtual, via Microsoft teams, depending on the needs of the individual. The project will explore the experiences of sexual health related promotion and barriers and facilitators in complying with the advice amongst LGBTQ+ inclusion health groups.

The project will be led by the Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator at UKHSA but have commissioned EP:IC, an organisation with experience of research with Inclusion Health groups to undertake recruitment and interviews.
