Research summary
Patients suffering severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) frequently require intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. This involves inserting an ICP monitor directly into the brain tissue through a small hole drilled in the skull. They also may require surgery to remove badly damaged areas of brain tissue. They may also require therapeutic drainage of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) from the brain via a small tube placed within the brain or spinal canal.
Usually, damaged brain and CSF are discarded and we would like to use this material for scientific analysis instead of discarding it.
We would also like to retain any monitors or drainage tubes that have been placed into the brain in order to analyse cells which have stuck to them. These monitors are usually discarded.
We also intend to take a small sample of brain tissue when the ICP monitor is inserted.
We would also like to collect blood samples and obtain urine, saliva and faeces samples. We would store these samples and in the future use these to investigate the immune response to trauma at a cellular and molecular level.
The purpose of this project is to establish the safety and feasibility of the techniques outlined above in a small number of patients with the intent of guiding a larger project in the future.
