Research summary
Viral infections in children are generally mild and do not require any specific treatment. Enteroviruses and parechoviruses belong to the same family and usually cause flu-like illnesses or diarrhoea and vomiting in children. These infections are more common in the summer and autumn, but can occur throughout the year. Very occasionally, these viruses can cause severe illness that can affect the heart, liver, brain and nervous system. At present, we don’t know how often these severe illnesses occur or how many of the affected children are able to recover entirely from their illness.
We would like doctors from across the UK and Ireland to give us information about the children that develop such severe illnesses. At the same time, we have gathered a group of doctors who can provide specialist advice to help look after such children. With the help of the specialist doctors, at the end of the study, we hope that we will learn enough about this condition to write national guidelines to help doctors manage those patients across the nation.REC name
