Research summary
The current study will aim to answer the research question ‘What are the perceptions and experiences of people with a learning disability on their communication and literacy skills?’
Current evidence highlights the urgent need to find out more about the experiences of people with a learning disability, whose personal views have historically not been considered or addressed. People with a learning disability are known to be at risk of having reduced communication and literacy skills.
This study will aim to explore what perceptions and experiences service users have of their communication and literacy difficulties. It will explore the successes and challenges associated with these difficulties in communicating with others.
The study will involve interviews with 6-12 participants who are 18 years and older and have a confirmed learning disability. The participants will be recruited from the current caseload of a local HSC Trust community forensic and mental health learning disability service.
The current study is being undertaken as part of the researcher’s Masters Course through Ulster University. Funding for the university fees has been received from the Department of Health transformation monies.REC name
