  • Research summary

Radiotherapy is the use of ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells in order to cure or palliate the presenting condition. This treatment is delivered by Therapeutic Radiographers (TRs). There is wide variation in the standard of undergraduate training of TRs across the European Union (EU). With effective care underpinned by person-centred care, it is the aim of this project to inform the discussion relating to the development and standardisation of TR undergraduate training across the EU using the experiences and perceptions of oncology service users in Northern Ireland (NI) who have interacted with TRs as part of their treatment journey.
This study is part of a larger Europe-wide project. This Europe-wide EU-funded project addresses the issue of a lack of regulation or standardization in the undergraduate training of TRs across Europe. It aims to investigate and identify the gaps between the skills required by TRs to perform their duties in comparison with the educational training provided across Europe. It focuses specifically on the training required for the delivery of radiation to service users. It is a multi-faceted project.
This study, ‘Service Users’ Perspectives of Undergoing Radiotherapy – the Patient’s Voice’, is one such facet. It will be conducted across four project partner sites in Malta, Portugal, Poland and NI, UK.
This study and its associated research protocol and governance and ethical approval applications relate only to NI, UK and will focus on UK recommended competencies (HCPC, 2019; SCoR, 2019).
