  • Research summary

The purpose of the study is to discover Service users’ perspective on the effectiveness of a self-management group within a forensic mental health setting and to ascertain how well it prepares them to contribute to their own Care & Treatment Plans.

The Welsh Mental Health Measure (2010)
The Welsh Mental Health Measure (2010) stipulated that from June 2012 every service user within secondary mental health services must have a “Care and Treatment Plan (CTP)”. The Measure requires there to be a care and treatment plan for service users of all ages who have been assessed as requiring care and treatment within secondary mental health services.

    The Self Management Group
The self-management group is an 8 week group that runs three times a year. Topics covered in the group include information and strategies to deal with:
    • Accommodation
    • Education and training
    • Finance and money
    • Medical and other forms of treatment, including psychological interventions
    • Parenting or caring responsibilities
    • Personal care and physical wellbeing
    • Social, cultural and spiritual
    • Work and occupation
A comprehensive delivery pack is provided at the start of the Self Management Group and the Service Users who participate can be awarded a nationally recognised certificate from Agored Cymru.
