  • Research summary

What are service users’ experiences of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in a specialist airways service? MDTs are made up of different professions who work together to care for patients with specific difficulties. The airways service uses a MDT format to help support patients with complex respiratory issues such as vocal cord dysfunction. It is one of the few services in the country that can provide this type of support. By conducting research into how patients perceive and experience the service, the strengths and any potential problems of the service can be discovered. Many people will have experienced other types of care prior to attending the service and will be able to share their insights into how their care has been and is managed. Hearing patients’ views and voices is an important part of service delivery. As MDT working is often recommended for more chronic and complex health difficulties; discovering whether this approach is seen as beneficial and effective by patients, and which elements need improvement, can assist in the development of services.Patients who have attended the service and who had contact with at least two different members of the MDT will be asked if they would like to participate in the study. Participants will be interviewed about their experiences at the service. The study will aim to interview around 10 participants and will end once enough information has been gathered. Participants will be interviewed once for approximately one hour on a hospital site in a private room. The interviews will be audio recorded for data analysis. All identifiable information will be kept confidential unless there are significant risks involved.
