  • Research summary

The research is seeking to explore service-users with learning disabilities' experience of restraint. It will be conducted at Calderstones NHS Trust. Calderstones provides specialist, low, and medium secure services for adults with learning disabilities. In recent years a number of reports have the highlighted the irregular and sometimes improper use of physical restraint in learning disability services. Restraint has been shown to cause distress to service-users and staff alike. This can be both physical and psychological. This has led to guidelines recommending a reduction in the use of restraint and a move towards proactive behaviour management. However, there is a lack of research conveying the experience of these service-users. Their perspective can inform training and reduce the risk of harm.
