  • Research summary

This study aims to illuminate the experiences of service users and students of the time they spend together on personality disorder units
    Background
This area has not been explored before. It is important that service users and student’s experiences are explored. Other studies have explored their experiences of the ‘relationship’ however that is assuming there is a relationship and also restricts the focus of their experiences purely on this relationship rather than experiences of the wider time together. Students are the future of nursing and often have the most contact with service users, it is therefore important we consider experiences of time service users and students spend together.
    Methodology
This qualitative study aims to explore the participants lived experience. The aim is to describe, explore, interpret, and understand the participant's experiences. Essentially to explore the participant’s experiences and enable their voices to be heard by collecting raw and meaningful data.
    Sample
A sample of student mental health nurses in their 2nd or 3rd year of study on a preregistration programme, and service users from two personality disorder units will be invited to participate in the research. Aiming for 10 in each group. The participants will be invited to participate in 1:1 interviews with the researcher.
The study will take place over the period of 2017-2021.
