Research summary
The proposed study is a qualitative project which aims to answer the question “How can the perceived psychological and relational processes of a patient reflective group help to explain the perceived experience of recovery in a medium secure forensic setting?” The study will use Grounded Theory as its method in order to explore the experience of both staff and service user attendees of existing reflective groups run as part of treatment on medium secure wards in a forensic hospital based in Sussex Partnership foundation Trust.
The Annual Operating Plan for Forensic Healthcare Services 2018-19 highlights the objectives of improving patient outcomes and increasing successful discharge rates from secure beds. The role of patient reflective groups in secure recovery is one that has not been explored empirically to date although they are experientially meaningful components of treatment and recovery for those working and residing on a medium secure forensic ward. The proposed study aims to fill this gap in research and understanding by exploring the experiences of both those attending and those facilitating a patient reflective group. This research is supported by the local leadership team and may inform further investigation into the effectiveness of the treatment in the future.
