  • Research summary

An investigation of the service user’s experience of implementing hip precautions following total hip replacement surgery.

Total hip replacement is an increasingly common treatment for osteoarthritis of the hip. The use of hip precautions as a post-operative treatment protocol with this group of service users can vary in terms of movement precautions enforced and the length of time which these are expected to be adhered to.
A literature review has determined that the practice of implementing hip precautions with this group of service users is starting to be questioned, but research is in its infancy. It has not yet been possible to draw definitive conclusions to form practice guidelines in this area.
Considering the variation in practice and the emerging case for change, it is felt important to gain an understanding of how current practice is experienced by service users. This will inform the debate and contribute valuable evidence that can influence future decisions relating to change in practice.
A qualitative research design will be adopted to allow exploration of the service user’s experience of implementing hip precautions.
Semi-structured interviews will be completed by the researcher 6 weeks post-operatively when the service user returns to the hospital for their follow-up physiotherapy appointment. It is anticipated that the interview will last for up to 60 minutes, and this will be completed in a private clinic room. The interview will be digitally recorded with field notes taken to note mannerisms and behaviour.
The raw data will then be transcribed and analysed thematically. This will be completed initially by the researcher, then triangulation of the data analysis will be completed by the research supervisor to check themes and coding.
