Research summary
The purpose of this study is to explore patients’ and healthcare professionals’ views regarding self-management support interventions for bronchiectasis in order to develop a framework which will be tested in a later feasibility study. It is important for people/carers to stick to their treatments, and self-management support interventions can help people to do this by teaching them about their condition, available treatments, exercise and what to do if their condition changes. Healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with bronchiectasis and patients over the age of 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of bronchiectasis who are clinically stable will be eligible for recruitment. 10-15 healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors and physiotherapists will be approached through NHS Trust gatekeepers for interviewing either by telephone or face to face. Six to eight patients per age group (18-30, 31-60 and 60 and over) will be approached to take part in the focus groups via NHS Trust gatekeepers in an outpatient or community setting. Both interviews and focus groups are expected to last up to 60 minutes and are expected to take place at participating Trusts' premises or at Edge Hill University. The method of data analysis will identify and report patterns across interviews and focus groups. This research is funded by Edge Hill University Research Investment Fund.
