Research summary
We will interview up to 15 patients with COPD who have had a varied hospital admission history. This will include people who have been frequently admitted (>4 times per year), infrequently admitted (1-2 per year) and those who have not been admitted. In addition up to 15 health care providers (primary care), and local commissioners will be interviewed. The focus of the interviews will concern self-management of symptoms and healthcare utilisation. The purpose of these interviews will be to gain information that will aid the development of a self-management based intervention for people with COPD. By identifying the barriers for patients and health care practitioners we can map an intervention that directly targets barriers and incorporate known facilitators.
