Research summary
There is good evidence that psychological therapy can help people overcome depression. However, after therapy has ended it can be difficult to stay well and for some people the depression can re-occur. Service users have also told us it can be difficult to adapt to the end of therapy and would welcome some help to stay well. This project involves supporting the self-management plans that may have already been developed during therapy with one face-to face meeting with a Psychological Well-being Practitioner (PWP) followed by three follow-up telephone calls every month. We call this the SMarT intervention (Self-Management after Therapy). We will see how helpful and acceptable this intervention is by interviewing the practitioners and some of the service users. We will also continue to use the outcome questionnaires used during therapy and a record of how often the person was able to carry out the intervention activities. Findings from this study will help us to evaluate how helpful the intervention was in helping people stay well and to make improvements.
