  • Research summary

This study aims to assess and compare self-esteem and oral health-related quality of life in patients with class II and class III skeletal patterns undergoing Orthognathic surgery. To assess the effect of age, gender or ethnic group on self-esteem and oral health-related quality of life.

Participants will be recruited from the Birmingham Dental Hospital. Orthognathic patients at any time point prior to orthognathic surgery will be invited to participate.
The sample will be divided into Class II and Class III skeletal patterns from initial clinical assessment.

Inclusion criteria are class II or class III patients undergoing either single or bimaxillary jaw surgery.
The exclusion criteria are patients with learning difficulties and syndromic patients including cleft lip palate, trauma patients, facial asymmetry and patients who have undergone previous treatment and post orthognathic surgery patients. The study will also exclude non-English speaking patients and those who do not provide consent to participate.

Those eligible to participate in the study following application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria and who have provided consent, will then be asked to complete the following standardized questionnaires:
    Rosenberg Self Esteem
    Orthognathic Quality of Life

Participants will be asked to provide the following demographic data:

    Gender
    Ethnic group
    Age

The following clinical data will be recorded:
    Skeletal pattern
    Stage of orthodontic treatment
    IOTN
    IOFTN

The subjects will be recruited by the chief investigator and clinicians working on the orthognathic joint clinics and those clinicians providing presurgical orthodontics to patients. Participants will be asked to complete the questionnaire in a private room.

SPSS for Windows will be used for statistical analysis. The primary outcome measures of self esteem and oral health-related quality of life will be compared in Class II and Class III skeletal patients. Regression analysis will be used to determine the effect of age, gender, ethnicity, IOTN and IOFTN.
