Research summary
Cognitive control is the process that allows the planning of one’s behaviour in line with internal goals. It is related to inhibiting automatic responses and flexible responding. The aim of the study is to refine a measure of cognitive control, establish norms for this clinical population, and identify measurable associations between cognitive control and personality traits that are relevant to clinical progress.
Cognitive dyscontrol is a lack of cognitive control. It is a prominent feature in many psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), substance abuse disorders, and psychopathy. It is commonly related to impulsive behaviour including aggression, risky sexual behaviour, substance misuses, self-harm and suicide.
The study will be conducted in ABMU Health Board with inpatient volunteers who are detained patients under the Mental Health Act in low and medium secure units. The study will last up to two years.
Developing a singular, objective tool to reliability identify patterns of cognitive control and track changes over time would be helpful to clinicians to aid in the prediction and management of risky behaviours.REC name
