Research summary
The two main aims of this study are:
To increase awareness and understanding of the experiences of people with eating disorders when seeking help in general practice.
To make recommendations for the care of people with eating disorders when seeking help in general practice
This research therefore is an exploration of the experiences of people when seeking help for eating disorders in the general practice setting.Purposive sampling will identify participants who have experienced seeking help for an eating disorder in general practice. The participants will include people with a range of eating disorders some of whom may not have had a formal diagnosis or received specialist help. This approach was chosen to reflect the nature of general practice by exploring the experiences of people with early symptoms through to those in recovery or living with a chronic condition. A grounded theory method will be used to collect and analyse qualitative data. Semi structured individual interviews of about an hour will be undertaken. Some participants may be asked to participate in a further interview as the study progresses to follow up emerging themes. Data analysis will occur concurrently with the interviews in accordance with the grounded theory method.REC name
