  • Research summary

Annually, approx. 1.3 million ischemic strokes occur worldwide prematurely in adults aged 18 to 49 years. In at least 1/3 of the patients, the underlying cause of the stroke remains unclear despite extensive investigations (cryptogenic stroke). The aim of this study is to decipher transient triggers, chronic subclinical and clinical risk factors, and genetic factors underlying early-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke after comprehensive diagnostic work-up as well as to study long-term prognosis after such events. No new drugs or devices are being studied.
Our global aim to enroll 600 patients aged 18-49 years with first-ever imaging-positive cryptogenic ischemic stroke after comprehensive standardized diagnostic workup and 600 stroke-free control subjects matched to patients’ gender, ethnicity and age. The study will be conducted in university hospitals, central hospitals and neurocenters mostly in Europe but also in Australia and in North- and South-America.
