Research summary
This study aims to understand and explore the experiences of women with learning disabilities who have been subject to the use of seclusion and / or long-term segregation. I intend to use a qualitative case study approach and interview women and those who nurse them to try and understand these experiences. The research aims to add to the paucity of literature around this particular group of individuals as well as to provide further evidence to support potential policy changes around the use of restrictive practice within inpatient settings. The study will adopt a multi-site approach, aiming to interview individuals from up to 4 different hospitals, consisting of both NHS and Private organisations. It is envisaged that the research study will be conducted between a period of 1 to 2 years. Each participant will need to fully understand and offer informed consent throughout the process which will be continually assessed and sought by both the researcher and the clinical team providing care for these women. Interview techniques will be adapted in order to meet the needs of each person.
