Research summary
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is associated with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, and a form of inflammatory arthritis specific to cystic fibrosis was first described in the late 1970s.
With input from Rheumatologists, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists working with CF, and the CF consultants, we have designed a clinical tool to identify patients attending the CF clinic who have musculoskeletal problems that need to be addressed with onward referral to physiotherapy or rheumatology.
The design of this has been partially drawn from the PEST screening tool, a validated screening questionnaire used in dermatology to identify patients attending with skin psoriasis who are also at risk of having psoriatic arthritis and need to be referred on for assessment.
We intend to use this questionnaire in the clinic with patients attending their routine follow-up appointments with the aim of using the information to offer further assessment by physiotherapy or rheumatology if needed.
We would also like to use the data it produces in an anonymised fashion to review the epidemiology of patient reported musculoskeletal symptoms in patients with CF. We will give the patients the option of opting to fill in the questionnaire for clinical purposes but opting out of their anonymised data being added to the database for research purposes. At a later point we would like to use this data to identify patients to invite to be part of a study better characterising the inflammatory arthritis associated with Cystic Fibrosis; this would run as a separate study with separate consent.
Data such as relating to CF for each patient such as lung function, pancreatic sufficiency, current infection, will be recorded in parallel with the questionnaire to look for correlations with symptoms.REC name
