Data collection arrangements
The population of interest includes adults with mental illness and healthy adult volunteers. The selection criteria is people who are willing to be contacted about taking part in mental health research.
The database currently contains details for over 600 volunteers. These participants were recruited by psychiatrists involved in the treatment or care of an individual, relative or friend. Register volunteers were also recruited through other research projects, or through research updates placed in the newsletters of community support organisations.
Plans to increase recruitment to the Register include the provision of a website to enable volunteers to download an Information Sheet, Consent Form and Contact Details Sheet. Websites of supporting community organisations and research groups throughout Scotland will be able to link to the Research Register website, allowing access to information about the Register from a variety of online sources. The Register will also be promoted through physical posters placed at Data Collection Centres and fliers which can be included in patient information packs (where appropriate Trust Management permission is granted). In addition, a communication channel using SMS text messaging is proposed to enable interested potential volunteers to text their email address and receive information about the Research Register.Research programme
The register will be potentially used to support all ethically approved studies in Scotland, subject to R&D approvals and review by the SMHRN.
