Research summary
The Scottish Health Survey is a study of the health of people in Scotland, commissioned by the Scottish Government. It has previously been carried out in 1995, 1998, 2003 and continuously since 2008. In July 2017, a consortium led by\nScotCen was awarded the contract to carry out the 2018-21 surveys.\nThe study provides information that cannot be obtained from other sources about the public’s health and the factors that affect health. It is used to monitor trends in the nation’s health, estimate the proportion of people in Scotland who\nhave certain health conditions, and determine how common certain risk factors and combinations of risk factors are. The 2018-21 surveys will involve two types of interview. All participating individuals will take part in an interview in which\nthey are asked questions by a survey interviewer and have their height and weight measured. A randomly selected group of one-third of participants will also be asked to take part in further measurements conducted by the interviewer,\nand to provide urine and saliva samples. Each year, target samples of 5,112 adults (aged 16+) and 2,031 children (aged 0-15) will take part in the main interview. The sample will be representative of the population both nationally and regionally. Participants will be recruited from everyone living at a sample of randomly selected private addresses in Scotland. Participation is entirely voluntary. A sub-sample of adults (1704) will participate in a series of extra questions and measurements. This will consist of a brief interview, the taking of measurements (blood pressure and waist circumference), as well as saliva samples.
