Research summary
A growing number of people live with dementia in the UK, with estimates of about 900,000 at present, and this number is set to substantially increase over the coming years due to the rise in population age. This increasing demand has placed considerable strain on both health and social care already, and the Government has recognised the need to research how to improve services. One key service for people who live with dementia is social care. At present the UK Government and the NHS have recognised some specific issues in social care; differences in standards and practices, differences in access to social care, staffing issues, and a low understanding on how health and social care practice can work together (integrated care).
The focus for this study is the delivery and practice of social care and integrated care for people living with dementia. The research project has two strands, each of which will gather the views and perspectives of those who provide services (practitioners, managers) and those who receive services (persons living with dementia and their families). One strand will focus on social work as this service often leads on the provision of social care. The other strand will focus on integrated care and how health, social care, and other services can work effectively together.
Our project will gather new evidence by conducting interviews with those who provide and receive services, we will also conduct observations of meetings/appointments between practitioners and persons living with dementia, and we will also arrange focus groups to understand group perspectives. We will ensure our findings are shared with all relevant stakeholders through events, workshops, and research publications. The findings from this study will help to plan and design better ways to provide social and integrated care for those who live with dementia.REC name
