  • Research summary

We want to understand how the length of inpatient spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation stay (LOS) impacts how people experience their overall rehabilitation experience, how length of stay impacts functional improvement, and how they felt about their LOS, after discharge.

First, we want to complete several focus groups. These will be with 1. people with SCI who have been patients at a UK SCI rehabilitation centre, 2. carers of people with SCI, and 3. staff at rehabilitation centres. We will ask how inpatients with SCI and their carers, how they feel that LOS impacted their rehab experience at an NHS England-funded spinal injury centre. We will ask staff how their feel that the average LOS of their patients with SCI impacts their ability to offer rehabilitation care.

We will analyse common themes identified in focus groups through focused interviews. These interviews will be with people who were not in the original focus groups, and they will help us to develop a questionnaire. We will then pilot this questionnaire with an additional group of people. The end product will be a survey to be used with more people with SCI.

The last part of this study will involve giving this questionnaire to 500 people in the UK (~2100 people across all participating countries). This UK arm of this study is part of a larger international study which also includes the US, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands. The questionnaire will aim to answer the questions written in the first paragraph.
