Research summary
Simple bone cysts are cysts filled with fluid that occur most frequently in the long bones (arms or legs) of children. They are considered benign as they do not spread beyond the affected bone. Some cysts may heal on their own, while others require additional treatment. Patients are prone to pain, fractures, and rarely growth disturbance. There are many ways to treat simple bone cysts but it is currently unclear if one way is better than another. The purpose of this research study is to compare the effectiveness of two common treatments that are used by orthopaedic surgeons today.
Approximately 160 simple bone cyst patients will be enrolled in this research study across our international study sites. Eligible patients will be randomly assigned to receive one of two study treatments, either curettage with puncture or curettage with puncture followed by injection of Vitoss morsels. Data will be collected over a two year period from X-rays, physical exams and self-reported questionnaires.
This study is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
