Research summary
The aim of this study is to compare the diagnostic performance of serum and saliva cortisol tests and to establish if measurement of salivary cortisol is more reliable, and therefore obviate the need for blood sampling. Saliva collection also has the advantage of non-invasive, stress-free sampling for patients, and can even be performed at home. The cortisol awakening response by salivary cortisol measurement will also be assessed for diagnostic utility in suspected hypoadrenalism in comparison to contemporary assessment of adrenal function.
