  • Research summary

We aim to measure the difference in salivary biomarkers in children aged between 3 and 18 years, with adrenal insufficiency (AI) condition (e.g. congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), administered with 2.5 mg or 7.5mg oral hydrocortisone derived from 10mg tablets, to determine whether adequate doses are received when administered in this way.
This is important as inadequate treatment puts the patient at risk of adrenal crisis and their quality of life is also likely to be affected adversely by the chronic symptoms of adrenal insufficiency. In addition, failure to suppress adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in patients with CAH results in increased adrenal androgen secretion, virilisation, accelerated growth and skeletal maturation.
