  • Research summary

In this study we will measure adrenal gland hormones in the saliva of healthy children aged more that five years and young people aged less than 18 years. In doing so we will generate information that can be used to identify patients in whom adrenal gland hormones are elevated, reduced, or normal to aid the diagnosis of adrenal gland conditions, and to monitor the adequacy of treatment.
Participants will be recruited through the following paths: (1) children of Alder Hey and University of Liverpool staff (2) healthy siblings of children attending Alder Hey appointments and (3) children attending for appointments that are not associated with a disorder of adrenal function.
Participants who are the children of members of staff and those who are siblings of children attending appointments at Alder Hey, will be invited to attend an appointment where consent and assent will be obtained. The following measurements will be made: height, weight and blood pressure.
For participants who are recruited through clinic, consent, assent and measurements of height, weight and blood pressure will be made during a planned attendance at Alder Hey whenever possible. If the family would prefer, a separate appointment will be made for a study visit.
On a day of the family's chosing participants will collect saliva samples every 2 hours during waking hours, starting with a sample collected 30 minutes after waking. This is likely to be during a weekend or school holiday. Participants will be encouraged to undertake their normal daily activities on the day of sample collection.
Saliva samples will be stored in the family's domestic freezer until returned to Alder Hey by a parent or carer, preferably within ten days to aid study monitoring.
