Data collection arrangements
The saliva bank will hold saliva collected from healthy volunteers. The HTA codes of practice A and E will be followed throughout the process from taking consent to the disposal of the saliva. Saliva produced in the mouth is present at all times (unstimulated saliva), but saliva which is produced in response to food or drink (stimulated), is slightly different from unstimulated saliva. The saliva bank will collect stimulated and non-stimulated saliva, but will not collect any data about donors. Potential donors will be staff and students working at the University of Bristol, and will be approached by someone trained in taking informed consent. They will be provided with an information sheet which will also be verbally explained to them, given the chance to ask questions, and if happy to donate asked to sign a consent form. All donors will be able to withdraw their consent at any time without giving a reason, this will be made clear in the information sheet and consent form. Saliva will be used on the same day as collection or if required for subsequent days can be frozen in -20 freezers held within the research laboratories within the Bristol Dental School and Hospital.
Research programme
The saliva bank will provide saliva for researchers who want to use in vitro (laboratory) experiments to investigate processes important in dental diseases or disorders, such as caries, erosion and staining. Some researchers will also want to test products such as toothpastes and mouthrinses or examine dental materials to see if and how they benefit dental diseases and disorders. Most researchers will be University staff and students, funded by research councils, charities, or working in collaboration with companies. To examine dental diseases and disorders it is important to treat specimens of tooth tissue, substitute tooth materials or dental materials with saliva, to more closely mimic conditions present in the mouth. Saliva influences processes such as tooth tissue loss or gain, dental material properties and bacterial properties such as adhesion or the uptake of dental stain. Saliva treatments of tooth tissues/materials are followed by, or alternate with, other treatments including; exposure to suspensions of bacteria for study of bacterial properties/adhesion; exposure to solutions such as fluoride mouthrinses or abrasive agents like toothpastes to examine their effect on tooth loss or gain; exposure to agents that may stain teeth and/or agents designed to inhibit stain uptake or to promote stain removal.
