Research summary
Staying Active and Independent Longer (SAIL) is a Europe-wide programme that aims to stimulate active ageing and a number of interventions are being run along the Norfolk coast. SAIL in Norfolk is led by Norfolk County Council and programme delivery is by Active Norfolk (the county sports partnership). Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia (UEA) are responsible for the evaluation.
SAIL will work with a care provider (Norse Care) to develop dementia-friendly walks in the immediate vicinity of a number of their care homes (Doorstep walks) and to provide ‘Memories Mini Golf’ sets that will be moved around different care homes so that residents can play.
The UEA are developing and coordinating the evaluation of SAIL in Norfolk (UEA are not involved in delivery). Participants in the Doorstep Walks and Memories Mini Golf will be asked to report their levels of wellbeing, happiness and interestedness before, directly after, and one hour after the sessions. This will be done using simple rating scales that have been used before with people living with dementia. UEA will also gather feedback from participants and stakeholders for these activities.
This evaluation may potentially benefit people living in care settings because if more is understood about the effect of the activities, and how they are best delivered, this may better enable the planning of services to improve their quality of lives.
