Research summary
The aim of this project is to engage patients/parents/carers to monitor, assess and report back on care so that problems and concerns can be addressed in timely and meaningful ways. We will focus on core areas of care previously identified (by surveys, audits, complaints and litigation) as areas of concern by patients (adult, children and parent/carers) and work with patients/carers and staff to co-design a patient administered checklist (PAC) of clear statements about good care. The PAC will be given to patients in two settings - the Emergency Department (ED) and Paediatric inpatient ward. Patients/carers will be invited to use the PAC to highlight areas that have not been addressed to their satisfaction. The clinician (nurse or doctor) who sees them can use the checklist to see concerns and address them. We will measure patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.
Our project will
1. develop the PAC to ensure that it covers the areas of concern to patients/parents/carers, using patient centred co-design methods
2. test the PAC in two settings
3. explore how patients/parents/carers and staff use the PAC and its impact on care using qualitative and quantitative methods
4. spread this simple intervention (if successful)REC name
