  • Research summary

Adult safeguarding involves, ‘people and organisations working together to prevent and stop both the risks and experiences of such harm’ (DH 2022, para 14.7) . The Care Act 2014 makes adult safeguarding a legal duty for local authorities and other agencies in England. This is particularly important for people living with dementia, as they are at higher risk of experiencing abuse or neglect, in their own homes and care settings.
This project aims to outline primary care professionals understanding of adult safeguarding law and policy, their responses to abuse and neglect and how social services assess and manage safeguarding referrals relating to people living with dementia in primary care settings. Furthermore, the study will analyse the experiences of people with dementia and families who are at the centre of adult safeguarding.
During phase 1, we will synthesise current literature to develop a theory which will be tested in later parts of the research process. In phase 2, we will analyse national statistics on safeguarding, ageing and dementia data (using the NHS digital dataset and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing) to understand patterns of reporting and how they vary across location, gender, ethnicity and time period.
In phase 3, Health and Care Professionals, people with dementia, and carers/family members of people with dementia, will participate in an interview and/or focus group and complete a demographic questionnaire. Eligible participants will have been involved in a section 42 safeguarding enquiry involving a person with dementia. We will analyse participants lived experiences and identify approaches for preventing abuse and collaboration amongst relevant agencies. Phase 3 will help us to develop complex case studies.
This study will be conducted at UoM, 2 Local Authority sites (Leeds and Greater Manchester) and one NHS site (Sefton). This study will end on the 30th of March 2024.
