Research summary
Typically, vehicles which transport service users to and from day care facilities are staffed by one driver and one guide help. Care staff responsible for the safe transportation of service users with disability often encounter a range of challenges associated with transportation. For example, some individuals may habitually release or partially release themselves from the seatbelt. These types of behaviours expose the service user, guide help, driver and other passengers to an increased risk of fatality or serious injury in the event of an accident. Other service users may refuse to wear a seatbelt and may become mobile during transit placing himself/ herself, other passengers and the driver at risk of serious harm.
