Research summary
Ageing affects everyone, yet not everyone ages at the same biological rate. Most older adults in the UK are now also overweight or living with obesity. Understanding an individual’s biological age (BA) allows researchers to identify those at risk for age-related diseases, develop targeted interventions, and develop approaches to improve longevity and quality of life.
In this project, we will establish a novel panel of BA measurements to study how ageing progresses and how it impacts on our health. We will use existing stored samples to develop improved laboratory methods, establish new cell-culture methods to explore the ageing of fat cells, and use modern data analysis to examine patterns and signatures of ageing. This project will lead to a comprehensive ‘Southampton Ageing Biomarker Research’ (SABRE) panel.
This project will allow us to conduct cutting-edge ageing research, allowing past cohorts and future studies to incorporate our novel ageing markers. This work will support larger future funding applications and bolster the University of Southampton’s position as a leader in ageing research. This panel will help researchers to continue to develop new strategies for healthy ageing and disease prevention, including those who are overweight or living with obesity.REC name
