Data collection arrangements
The serum, plasma and DNA samples which are already incorporated in the existing Research Biobank have all been collected as part of prior research studies. The original objectives of these studies have been achieved and have resulted in the collation of a large amount of data about each of the samples (all of the samples are completely anonymised), including demographic data, information on lifestyle (e.g. smoking history) plus medical history and the results of routine biochemical and haematological analyses as well as the results of research tests including genomic, metabolic and specific biomarker analyses. As there are still a considerable number of samples (or portions of the samples) remaining this makes a valuable research resource, both for the sponsor of the research biobank as well as the wider research community to be used for biomarker research aimed at the diagnosis, progression or treatment of human disease.
Research programme
The samples were collected as part of the projects researching the diagnosis of coronary heart disease and therefore a major focus for the use of the samples of the research biobank will be for further research into this human disease. However, research relating to the role of the biomarkers in the diagnosis, progression or treatment of other human diseases may also be undertaken. Applications for use of the samples and/or data (all of which are anonymised) will be accepted from all potential investigators and the research will be evaluated on scientific merit, including whether the objectives of the study are compatible with the overall aims and ethical approval of the research biobank, as well as the amount and number of samples requested.
