  • Research summary

Recurrent urinary tract infection is a common problem affecting a large proportion of the female population. One of the most common predisposing risk factors for recurrent urinary tract infection is sexual intercourse. One treatment for recurrent UTI’s is intravesical therapy with sodium hyaluronate. There is no data published on the association between sexual function and recurrent urinary tract infections. In addition there is no data on how intravesical therapy may affect patients’ sexual dysfunction associated with recurrent urinary tract infections. This is a prospective cohort observational study to assess the effect of recurrent urinary tract infections on women’s sexual function and the impact of treatment on change in sexual function. Women with a history of bacterial or abacterial recurrent cystitis who are suitable for treatment with intravesical therapy will be included in the study. As part of a normal evaluation within the department, patients complete the PISQ-12 and FSDS-R Sexual Function questionnaires, an O’Leary Sant Pain questionnaire, an ICIQ-VS, ICIQ-UI short form and ICIQ-FLUTS questionnaires. These are performed at baseline and then 3, 6 and 12 months following treatment with intravesical therapy for recurrent cystitis.

Results from sexual function and symptom score questionnaires will be compared before and after treatment. In addition, the background of sexual dysfunction will be investigated from baseline questionnaires. Dissemination of the study at national and international meetings will allow others to use the data to counsel their patients before and after treatment.
