  • Research summary

The proposed research will explore women's concerns, expectations and experiences of membrane rupture prior to or with early labour contractions. Women's interest in approaches that support their own confirmation of membrane rupture are also required to enable women to make informed decisions themselves and to inform local service needs. A qualitative methodology will be used. The study will be carried out in settings where NHS maternity care is provided by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust (both hospital and community settings). Six digitally-recorded focus group discussions will be conducted in total. We hope to include between 8-10 women for each focus group, for a total maximum of 60 participants. Women recruited during pregnancy will be invited to participate in two focus groups: the first in the last 13 weeks of pregnancy (to identify expectations of membrane rupture) and the second approxcimately 4-10 weeks after the birth of their baby (to understand their experiences). Two separate postnatal groups will be arranged, specifically for women who experienced prelabour rupture of membranes or rupture of membranes at term in early labour- women will be invited to attend 4-10 weeks after giving birth. For women who wish to contribute but who are unable to attend the postnatal focus group, we will offer the opportunity of a telephone interview. Focus group recordings will be fully transcribed and analysed. Recommendations for service provision and further research will be elaborated.
